Every Tradition. Every Model. One Community.

A Distinct Role
in Modern Medicine.

Healthcare clowning is a specialised role within modern medicine, bridging clinical environments with essential human connection. The profession takes many vital forms: theatrical, relational, clinical, and cultural. Yet all share a single mandate: improving patient outcomes, alleviating institutional stress, and humanizing healthcare delivery.

International Association of Healthcare Clowning (IAHC) is being established as a certification and training body to honour the entire ecosystem of clowning as a clinical practice. By defining universal professional standards while protecting regional and stylistic diversity, IAHC ensures that every tradition is recognised, every practitioner belongs, and the full breadth of this healthcare role is validated, developed, and integrated globally.

Systematic reviews document measurable reductions in procedural anxiety, pain perception, and parental distress when trained healthcare clowns are integrated into clinical care teams, across paediatric, geriatric, and palliative settings worldwide.

A Clinical Discipline

Healthcare Clowning Is Not Entertainment.
It Is Evidence-Based Care.

Healthcare clowning is a structured, evidence-informed clinical practice in which trained professionals use humor, play, and relational presence to support the psychosocial wellbeing of patients, families, and care teams in medical settings.

Unlike performance or entertainment, healthcare clowning operates within the therapeutic relationship, responding to the patient's emotional and clinical state, collaborating with the care team, and adapting in real time to the demands of the clinical environment.

The evidence base is robust: systematic reviews document reductions in pre-operative anxiety, procedural pain, and parental distress. Healthcare clowning is practiced in over 40 countries and is increasingly recognized as a core component of psychosocial care in pediatric, geriatric, palliative, and acute settings. See the Resources Library for full citations.

A Note to Practitioners

Your artistry is not in question.
IAHC is here to support it.

The character you have built, the relationships you form at the bedside, the instinct that tells you when to lean in and when to simply be present: none of that is being challenged. That is the heart of this work, and no credential changes it.

What IAHC is being built to do is stand behind you. To give your expertise the professional recognition it deserves. To connect you with peers across the world who understand what this work actually requires. And to make sure that as healthcare evolves, as infection protocols shift, as evidence accumulates, and as clinical environments grow more complex, you are not navigating those changes alone.

For those newer to the field: you are entering a practice with decades of skilled, thoughtful work behind it. IAHC is being built to give you a clear path in, proper mentorship, and a community that takes this profession as seriously as you do.

IAHC will not tell you how to be a healthcare clown. It will give you the infrastructure, the knowledge, and the professional standing to do that work at the highest possible level, for the duration of your career.
